Saving a Million Lives Using E-Liquids

According to a BBC report, health experts from UCL assert that it is possible to save a million lives using electronic cigarettes, and Professor Robert West says that the question would just be how to realize such a goal. He spoke at London's Royal Society where a huge number of scientists and law-makers had gathered.

smoking cigarettesIt is still unfathomable how the development of e-cigarettes has been doubling every year. About 13% of smokers are using the device, which simulates the process of smoking through heating up e-liquid solutions of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin in a chamber known as the cartomizer. During the Royal Society of London conference, a number of individuals were seen vaping right inside the hall, probably showing the support they have for the e-cigarette.

What Is Saving Lives?

The idea of saving a million lives may not be clearly understood. This is because we are having some debates on whether the e-ciggies should be in the market in the first place. Since the e-liquids are not under the tobacco laws of any country, it is feared that lack of regulation on this product could result in manufacturers producing e-juice with poisonous substances in them. Other than addressing the problem of thousands of people dying from tobacco related deaths, the devices themselves aggravate the problem.

On the other hand, saving lives could be achieved through the replacement of tobacco with the e-liquids. It is documented that smokers almost always die at least 10 years earlier than non-smokers. This means that if you quit smoking for vaping, you will live a little bit longer, and the e-liquid could save your life.

How Can We Save Lives Using E-Cigarettes?

Smoking destroys literally every part of your body: your lungs, heart, kidneys, blood vessels and so on. Death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and cardiovascular complications are very common in smokers. If the figure of smokers dropped by 50%, then we could be able to achieve saving a million lives.

E-liquids are meant to contain flavour and the diluent only so that the user will only have the illusion of smoking created, but won’t have to deal with any health problems as a result of the vaping process.

I love how the nanny state feels they know what is best for us, even though they haven’t “studied” it enough yet. Bottom line, if you are not smoking traditional cigarettes you are going to see improvements in your life. Whether it is just greater social acceptance, or possible improvement in your health. My grandmother has been smoking for 30 years, and had a bit of a health scare last year. We bought her a starter kit of e-ciggies and told her to just try them. She smokes traditional ciggies much less now, and her health has improved.

Side bonus: I am much happier to have her in my home because she is not spreading second hand smoke to my children. I don’t know if they will save a million lives, but they have made an improvement in mine and I don’t even smoke them.

I wasn’t convinced before getting my kit (as a present), but I suppose I thought “Anything’s worth a try at this point”, and I’m amazed at quick it took me to ditch cigs for good. I think if more people knew how satisfying it was – they’d give it a go.

Whilst it would be good to have more research into this area, it certainly looks promising in terms of relative impact on health. I don’t think anyone would be too surprised to learn that “smoking” with e-cigs is better for you than using cigarettes. I know what works better for me, having used both.

The signs look really good at this stage. Although you’ve still got Nicotine in there, that’s present in nicotine gum and other smoking-replacement products at similar levels, which is our choice to consume. What’s good about electronic cigarettes is the complete removal of all the extra harmful agents that exist in cigarettes (which are mostly there to deliberately make them more addictive).

I suppose it’s encouraging that the companies manufacturing the e-cigarettes are working in partnership with bodies to promote a healthier way of smoking. Let’s face it – the tobacco companies traditionally haven’t made this much of a priority. If we’ve found a healthier way of enjoying a smoke that can only be a good thing.

I can see this really taking off – it’ll be interesting to see how the big tobacco giants respond to this. No doubt they won’t be happy at their profit margins being attacked, but maybe they’ve had their day in the sun. If people want nicotine without all the extra nasty chemicals it doesn’t even look like a competition – the e-cig wins hands down as a delivery device.

And you aren't hurting people with second-hand smoke. That's the brilliant part.
