4 styles of e-cigarette

In this short guide we take a brief look at some different styles of electronic cigarettes; the pen, mini, cigar and pipe designs. We look at the appearance of each if these styles, some of their basic functions and some of the factors to consider when choosing which style is best for you.  

Pen style                                    

These are a group of e-cigarettes that are referred to as a pen style because they look very similar to ink pens in their appearance.

Mini style

The mini e-cig style is designed to be a similar shape, size and color as a traditional tobacco cigarette. E-cigarettes that are smaller than the pen style are referred to as mini electronic cigarettes and those that are closer in size to a traditional tobacco cigarette are sometimes referred to as 'super mini' e-ciggy.

Cigar style

Cigar style e-cigarettes vary in their size and range from a medium sized cigar up to a large Cuban cigar. Some designs have paper wrappings so they look even more like a real cigar.

Pipe style

The pipe electronic cigarette is designed to look like a real pipe; the cartridge and atomizer are stored in the mouth piece and most models include a light to simulate the glowing embers.

All of the above styles usually include an LED light to resemble the glowing embers of a traditional cigarette. This light can be a different colour to the traditional orange, such as blue or green.

Which is the best style?

The best style depends on what you are looking for and your needs at a particular time. Those people who have just switched to electronic cigarettes usually start off with a mini style e-cig as this is the closest to a real cigarette; they usually then progress onto other styles as their e-smoking develops. 

There are a few other things to take into consideration when deciding what style to opt for, for example, the bigger the size of the e-ciggy, the longer the cartridge and the battery tend to last. So, if you don't want to be frequently charging your e-cigarette up or changing cartridges then a cigar style e-cigarette might be worth considering (even if you have never smoked a cigar before).

Another important consideration when choosing a style of e-cig is thinking about whether you plan to use it in a public area where tobacco cigarettes are banned. If this is the case then it would be sensible to choose an e-cigarette that looks discreet, such as the pen or mini style. It would also be a good idea to choose an LED color light that is different to a tobacco cigarette light such as blue or green (not yellow or orange!).
